The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) has conducted high-quality clinical research for 25+ years and controlled human infection model (CHIM) studies since 2020. 1Day Africa began collaborating with MLW in 2022, initially around tuberculosis CHIMs, with a shared goal of deepening understanding of participant experiences and motivations. Together, MLW and 1Day Sooner are working to enhance participant representation in clinical research while building public trust through transparency and engagement.

How We Helped
- Embedded Collaboration: Participated as participant representatives in staff and MARVELS (Malawi Accelerated Research in Vaccines by Experimental and Laboratory Systems) team meetings
- Clinical Visits: Provided input on participant recruitment, informed consent, sample collection, medical screenings, and follow-up procedures
- Participant Interviews: Conducted interviews with volunteers across the participation lifecycle: prospective, current, past, and withdrawn
- In-Patient Facility Visits: Engaged with coordinators and supervisors to understand logistics around inpatient research, including feeding schedules, communication protocols, and recreational activities
- Community Outreach: Joined educational school visits and televised outreach programs to learn how MLW disseminates information and fosters public engagement with clinical research
