Panelists:

Sandeep Patel is an independent consultant and entrepreneur with deep expertise in science, business, and global health security. From 2020–2024, he was the first Director of BARDA’s DRIVe at HHS, managing over $700M in translational science investments and launching a $250M public-private VC fund. He also founded KidneyX and led the Advancing American Kidney Health Initiative to reform the transplant system and reduce dialysis reliance. At HHS, he pioneered incentive prizes and crowdsourcing to tackle complex health challenges.

Jean-Paul Chretien is Director of the BiTS Accelerator at Renaissance Philanthropy and served 20 years in the US Navy as a physician-scientist. At DARPA, he led the Triage Challenge and major biotech initiatives. Previously, he led DoD’s Pandemic Warning Team, advised on biodefense at the White House OSTP, oversaw Marine/NATO health operations in Afghanistan, and managed global infectious disease partnerships.

Liang Zhao is a UCSF professor in Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences. From 2015–2024, he directed the DQMM at FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs. With over 19 years in regulatory and industry roles, including at Pharsight, BMS, and MedImmune, he led efforts on model master files, model-integrated evidence, and introduced innovations in drug delivery, bioequivalence, and machine learning in pharmacometrics.
