Emory – Influenza (Atlanta, Georgia, USA)
The purpose of this study is to better understand how the body’s immune system responds to the influenza virus throughout the course of and after infection, and how the flu is spread in the environment. They are recruiting healthy participants aged 18-49. The study is five months long and includes 1-2 screening visits, an inpatient stay of 9-13 days, and up to 12-16 study visits. Johns Hopkins — Shigella/ETEC (Baltimore, MD)
The purpose of this study is to test an investigational oral vaccine called ShigETEC to prevent diarrheal illness caused by Shigella and ETEC bacteria that cause traveler’s diarrhea. They are recruiting healthy participants aged 18-50. The study is approximately 1 years long and includes 6 outpatient visits, a 10-day inpatient stay, and 4 phone calls. Johns Hopkins — Dengue (Baltimore, MD)
The purpose of this study is to test a new intravenous (IV) drug to see if it will treat or prevent dengue infection. They are recruiting healthy participants aged 18-55. The study is five months long and includes at least 2 screening visits, one IV infusion visit, one dengue virus challenge visit, and 15 follow-up appointments. Compensation is up to $3,425. University of Maryland Center for Vaccine Development – Malaria (Baltimore, MD)
This study aims to evaluate whether a wearable device can detect malaria infection, helping to develop non-invasive methods for identifying infections before symptoms begin. They are recruiting healthy adults aged 18–50. The study includes an inpatient stay of up to 7 nights as well as outpatient visits. Compensation is up to $2,715. Imperial College London – Influenza (London, UK)
The purpose of this study is compare the immune response when people get infected with flu versus when they receive a nasal spray flu vaccine. Researchers at the Imperial Clinical Research Facility (ICRF) are recruiting healthy participants aged 18-55 for the challenge arm, where volunteers will be infected with a well characterized flu virus. The study includes a pre-screening visit, screening visit(s), a baseline visit, a quarantine stay of up to 11 days, and four follow up visits over the next six months. Compensation is up to £2,835. Imperial College London, Jenner Institute – COVID-19 (London, Oxford, Southampton)
The purpose of this study is to develop a safe human infection model (challenge model) where volunteers who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 are exposed to the Omicron EG.5.1 subvariant of SARS-CoV-2 virus in a controlled manner. Jenner Institute – BCG (Oxford)
The purpose of this study is to understand more about the body’s immune response to a new inhaled BCG vaccine and to show the safety of using an inhaled BCG “challenge” to study new vaccines. They are recruiting healthy participants aged 18-55. Depending upon which group they are in,

Liverpool – Pneumococcus (Liverpool)
The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is conducting challenge research on a bacteria called Pneumococcus, which is the main cause of pneumonia. They are looking for participants in the Liverpool area who are 18-50 years old, generally well, and non-smokers. The team says, “ In the study, you may receive a pneumococcal vaccine, you will have a small amount of bacteria put in your nose and samples taken to learn about the immune response to the bacteria.
